The United States Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory of the United States and is fully integrated into the United States legal system. Our common law and statutory laws are fully compatible with the legal systems applicable in the 50 states. The court systems are similar to those in the United States, with a Territorial Court of general jurisdiction and a District Court of the Virgin Islands having the same jurisdiction as the federal District Courts in the United States. Appeals from local courts are ultimately determined in the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Procedure in all Courts is governed by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure and the Federal Rules of Evidence.
